I Have Anxiety and I Don't Know Why

Have you been feeling anxious for a while and just don’t know why? That lingering anxiety sits just below the surface, and no matter what you do—exercise, meditation, journaling—it seems never to go away. You may even feel frustrated because if you knew why, at least your feelings would have meaning and validation.
For high-achieving professionals, this is especially common. You might be a high-capacity leader, someone known at work for getting things done and thriving under pressure. Yet at home—or even in quiet moments—you feel like you’re failing, like you can’t shake this anxiety. You may wonder, “Why can’t I just feel okay?”
I’ve worked with many clients who experience persistent anxiety with no clear source. One of the first steps in my therapeutic approach is helping clients figure out where the anxiety is coming from and what it’s trying to tell them.
Anxiety Is About Your Head and Your Heart
A lot of times, the source of anxiety isn’t something you can solve by thinking alone. Anxiety often comes from a disconnect between your head and your heart.
• Your head is logical, analytical, and great at problem-solving.
• Your heart is trying to keep you alive based off what it perceives as dangerous. Sometimes it perceives people or situations as dangerous even though you know that you're safe. This discrepancy between your head and your heart is often confusing. Your heart is powerful and connected to your body too.
This is why anxiety often shows up physically:
• Tightness in your chest
• Racing heart
• Feeling hot or restless
When your heart is sending signals that your mind doesn’t fully understand, it can feel scary and confusing.
How Therapy Can Help
I specialize in helping clients understand what their heart and body are saying, then helping the head and heart communicate clearly. Once they’re on the same page, you can process anxiety, understand its source, and begin to make real, lasting change in your life.
Many clients think, “If I just analyze this, I’ll figure it out.” But often logic alone isn’t enough. Your heart and body hold information your conscious mind can’t access, and that’s where EMDR therapy comes in. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) allows your head and heart to work together, uncover root causes of anxiety, process stuck emotions, and help you feel calm in your body while understanding what’s happening. (Learn more about EMDR here).
