Safe and Sound Protocol
What is SSP?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, based on his Polyvagal Theory. It is designed to help regulate the nervous system, promoting emotional balance, social engagement, and overall resilience.
SSP uses specially filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve, a key player in managing stress and emotional regulation. By influencing how your nervous system responds to the world around you, SSP helps create a lasting sense of safety, connection, and calm.
What is SSP?
How does SSP work?
SSP consists of structured listening sessions featuring music that has been modified to emphasize specific frequencies. These frequencies activate the middle ear muscles, which play a vital role in your body's social engagement system.
By stimulating these muscles, SSP gently shifts your nervous system out of a defensive state (fight, flight, or freeze) and into a place of calm, connection, and healing. The result? Less anxiety, stress, and trauma-related symptoms—and more ease in social interactions and daily life.
Who can benefit from SSP?
While SSP isn’t the only way to address these challenges, it is a powerful tool that can speed up the healing process and unlock progress where other methods may have stalled.
SSP is beneficial for anyone seeking greater emotional regulation and stress resilience, but it’s especially effective for those struggling with:
✔
PTSD & trauma – Feeling stuck in fight, flight, or freeze mode.
✔
Anxiety & stress – Difficulty relaxing, constant overwhelm.
✔
Emotional dysregulation – Struggling to manage emotions effectively.
✔
Social interaction challenges – Feeling disconnected or misunderstood.
✔
Feeling "stuck" despite other therapies – If you've tried multiple approaches without success, SSP can help shift your system at a deeper level.
Is SSP right for you?
SSP includes anywhere from 5 to 15 hours of structured listening, depending on your needs.
